Myanmar: Coal-fired plant project scrapped, says Mon chief

Mon State Chief Minister Aye Zan told a meeting on June 3 that the state
government is scrapping plans for a controversial coal-fired power plant
project, said MP Myo Win of Ye constituency.

"Locals had criticised the chief minister for announcing on June 1 at a
state office press conference that Mon state would fail to develop much if
they did not accept the coal-fired power project. After facing intense
criticism of the project, the chief minister said the state government would
not allow the coal-fired power project to go ahead," Myo Win said.

"In the meeting I submitted information from an official about clean coal
technology introduced by Japan to fuel their power plants. When I asked the
official for further information about the technology, he said he knew only
that it was good. Officials had not discussed clean-coal technology with the
experts, so I said we needed expert opinion and also a third-party
organisation to monitor the outcomes.

"We should only be considering solutions to supply power for the state, not
for the whole country. The state government also needs to explain its plans
openly to residents. The chief minister said there was no need to do so for
the coal-fired power plant project since it would not be continued," Myo Win
said.
