Indonesia: PLN plans tender for 4.6 GW of coal-fired projects in 2017

Indonesian state-owned power utility PT PLN plans to launch tenders for
twelve mine-mouth coal-fired power projects in Sumatra and Kalimantan in
2017. The company aims to sign the first power purchase agreements (PPAs) in
June 2017 and to have all them settled by the end of the year.

The projects would have a cumulated capacity of 4,650 MW and would require a
total investment of US$7.2bn. Expected to be commissioned over the 2020-2024
period, they would help PLN ensure electricity supply in Sumatra and
Kalimantan, where electricity reserve margins (difference between installed
capacity and peak demand) are only 7-8%.
