Myanmar: Govt to spend Ks 107bn on new hydropower projects, extended
electricity
The government will spend more than Ks 107 billion this fiscal year on
building hydroelectric power plants and extending the generation of
electricity of the existing hydropower projects, according to the budget for
the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.
Of the total amount, Ks 2.2 billion will be spent on the comprehensive
repair of the Bilugyun hydropower project (1) and Hsedatgyi project.
Meanwhile, Ks 105 million is earmarked to build new power plants in Thaton,
Thilawa and Pahtolon regions and to extend the electricity generation
capacity of plants in Myanaung, Yawma, Hlawga, Thakayta and Ahlone.
Moreover, Ks 20.4 billion is to be spent on building power lines and
sub-power stations for new industrial projects; a total of Ks 223.7 billion
on the national grid extension projects, Ks 617 million on extending power
lines and Ks 22.4 billion on building substitute main power stations and
power grid lines.
The Hydropower Implementation Department has been allowed to spend Ks 21.5
billion on completing 36.95 per cent of upper Yeywa hydropower project, and
K46 billion on completing 68 per cent of upper Kyaingtaing hydropower
project.
Furthermore, Ks 55 billion will be spent on building 66-KV, 33-KV, 11-KV and
0.4-KV sub-power stations and power lines; Ks 277 million on building diesel
power stations and township electricity offices in Lailinpi and Khinekan
townships of Chin State and Ks 77.8 billion on purchasing 11-KV power lines
and equipment for sub-power stations for villages under a nationwide energy
supply progamme.
Up to the previous fiscal year (2016-2017), electricity had been supplied to
331 cities and 10,726 villages across the country. Electricity will be
supplied to nine more cities and 1,557 more villages. According to last
fiscal year's figures, over 140 cities and over 52,000 villages are without
electricity.
