Vietnam: Biomass power plant opens

Vietnam: Biomass power plant opens

The Biomass Power Plant that burns rice husks to generate power and reduce
carbon dioxide emissions has been opened in Nay Pyi Taw.

Built with Japanese assistance next to a Myanmar Agribusiness Public
Corporation (MAPCO) rice mill, it is the country's first biomass power
plant. It can generate 0.5 megawatts.

Burning husks traditionally creates pollution.

"Power generated from the plant will run rice mills. Surplus power will be
distributed to villagers. Power is generated from the waste of paddy husks.
Our consumption from the power grid can be reduced," Chit Khaing, the
chairman of MAPCO, said.

MAPCO will open another plant at its Golden Lace Rice Mill in Kyaiklat on
May 1. It said it would be able to generate 2.2MW. Moreover, it is preparing
to build a 1.6MW plant in Myaungmya, Ayeyarwady Region.

The MAPCO planned to generate 20MW from paddy husk, Chit Khaing said.

National power demand is expected to peak at 3,100MW this year, although
only about 2850MW could be generated.

Dr Aung Thu, minister for agriculture, livestock and irrigation, said
biomass power production would be extended to Bago, Sagaing and Yangon
regions to help fill some of the production gap. "We hope that Japan will
continue granting assistance for the technology," the minister said.
