Philippines: DOE, China state firm enter collaboration on power ventures

The Department of Energy (DOE) is signing a deal with China's National
Energy Administration (NEA) this week to firm up collaboration in
strengthening the Philippine power industry, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi
said.

The energy chief will meet with NEA's deputy minister and the minister of
trade from China this week.

The meeting was scheduled for the parties to sign a memorandum of agreement
(MOA) on possible areas of collaboration.

"(The MOA) with NEA of China, we're signing includes development
cooperation, technical cooperation, support and all others including nuclear
review," Cusi said.

Under the deal, the Philippines will be able to receive technical assistance
and information on new technologies in the power industry.

"We will also have exchanges of experience so we can avoid the mistakes,"
Cusi said.

The deal was a result of Cusi's meeting with NEA, which coincided with the
meeting of President Duterte's Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan
(PDP-Laban) with the Communist Party of China in Beijing in January.

The PDP-Laban delegation was led by Cusi, who was PDP-Laban vice chairman
prior his appointment as Energy secretary.

Previously, Cusi said areas of collaboration include training, development
of an energy mix and new technologies, advancement of transmission systems.

Meanwhile, initial collaboration could start on training of manpower in all
sectors of the power industry, such as transmission systems, he said.
