Myanmar: Yangon blackouts announced

Myanmar: Yangon blackouts announced

Yangon will be on power rotation plan until April 2 as supplies from the
Yadanar natural gas pipeline will be temporarily stopped, according to
Yangon Electricity Supply Board.

It said Yangon residents may face temporary blackouts as natural gas
turbines would not have a supply.

Yangon Region uses about 45 per cent of total electricity and the power
consumed increases from 150 to 200 megawatts annually. The Ministry of
Electric Power and Energy is planning to install a generator where power is
most needed, according to the President's Office.

Yangon Region's government is trying to produce an extra 100 megawatts this
summer, said Myint Thaung, regional minister for planning and finance, on
March 16.

"A special fund from President Htin Kyaw had been received to buy a
generator worth Ks30 billion, which can generate 25 megawatts of
electricity. We are worried about blackouts in the commercial hub," he said.
