Myanmar: Power demand set to reach 3,500MW

The Ministry of Electric Power and Energy expects power consumption across
the country to reach 3,500MW during the hot season.

Demand is expected to rise to 4,500MW by 2021.

The ministry generated 17.7 billion units during this fiscal year with 6.5
billion units consumed across the country in 2010-11. In 2015-16,
consumption reached 13.6 billion units, an increase in consumption of 200
per cent.

The National Electricity Master Plan stated that the ministry expected
consumption to increase more than 13 per cent each year. The increase has
been 16 per cent over the past five years.

This financial year 9.7 billion units were generated from hydropower and 8
billion from fossil fuels. Around 10.9 billion units were generated in
2012-13, 12.1 billion in 2013-14, 14 billion in 2014-15 and 15.9 billion in
2015-16, according to the ministry.
