Sumitomo begins construction of Tanjung Jati B power plant expansion project
in Indonesia
Sumitomo, Kansai Electric Power and PT United Tractors, an affiliate company
of Indonesia's PT Astra International, have commenced work on the Tanjung
Jati B coal-fired power plant unit 5 and 6 expansion project in Indonesia.
The approximately JPY500bn ($4.4bn) expansion project involves addition of
two high efficiency ultra-supercritical coal-fired units, each with 1,000MW
capacity, in an area adjacent to the existing 2,640MW Tanjung Jati B
coal-fired power plant in Central Jawa, Indonesia.
The existing Tanjung Jati B coal-fired power plant, which comprises four
units, is running as a base-load power plant supplying 11% of electricity in
Jawa-Bali Grid system.
Upon completion, the plant will supply power to Indonesian power utility
company PT PLN (Persero) under a 25-year purchase agreement.
The expansion project, which is a build, operate and transfer (BOT) scheme,
is expected to help the country meet the increasing energy demand.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has been awarded a
contract to supply two ultra-supercritical-pressure boilers and four
electrostatic precipitators for units 5 and 6 of the Tanjung Jati B power
plant.
Earlier, MHPS delivered two boilers for the units 3 and 4 of the power plant
which were commissioned in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
Sumitomo said re-expansion project is scheduled to be completed and enter
service in 2021.
In order to meet the increase power demand, the country is implementing an
initiative to boost its installed power generation capacity by 35,000MW by
2019.
