Myanmar: Wind power plants proposed
The Ministry of Electricity and Energy says it has proposed wind power plant
projects in Chin, Rakhine and Ayeyawady.
But the implementation process would be prolonged because of a lack of
technology and finance, it said.
The ministry is working to generate more power via natural gas, solar and
hydropower to meet increasing demand.
There are 19 thermal power plants with an installed capacity of about 2,430
megawatts. Ten are state-owned, five privately owned and the others have
shared ownership.
There are 24 hydropower plants, 21 of which are state-owned.
The country produced 9.7 billion units of hydropower and 8 billion units of
thermal power this fiscal year.
The country generated 10.9 billion units in 2012-13, 12.1 billion units in
2013-14, 14 billion units in 2014-15, 15.9 billion units in 2015-16 and 17.7
billion units in 2016-17.
Consumption is expected to reach up to 19.5 billion units in the next
financial year.
According to the National Electricity Master Plan, the annual power
consumption rate is expected to increase by 13 per cent each year.
