Myanmar: Parliament approves electrical grid project with Bimstec

The Union parliament approved a proposal on Wednesday to sign an agreement
for an electrical grid project with members of the Bay of Bengal Initiative
for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec).

The proposal was submitted by Pe Zin Tun, the minister for electric power
and energy, on November 21. The union parliament approved it after
discussions among four MPs.

The agreement is meant to improve the exchange of electricity between
Bimstec countries and set a principle to implement an interconnection
project between them, said President Htin Kyaw in a formal letter sent to
the parliament.

The letter said the plan would be implemented to transport electricity to
the power grids of member countries at appropriate costs.

Myanmar will benefit by generating electricity, reducing costs for
distributing it and decreasing fuel rates for generation, as well as by
supplying electricity at cost-effective rates. Member countries can use
energy sources by interconnecting power grids and increasing cooperation in
the power and energy sector by following existing laws, by-laws, and rules
and regulations, the letter said.

The Bimstec members are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and
Thailand, all of which are preparing to sign the agreement.
