Myanmar: Substations, transmission lines to be extended in new towns

Construction of substations and transmission lines by the Ministry of
Electricity and Energy to provide electricity to new towns and regions is
part of the 5-year plan beginning in fiscal 2017-2018, Deputy Minister Dr
Tun Naing said at last week's Pyithu Hluttaw session.

In answer to questions raised by Hluttaw MPs, Dr Tun Naing said the towns
that will get substations in the 5-year electrification project are Lay Shi,
Natmauk, Yenangyaung and Mone.

A 66/11 KV 5 MVA substation and 26 miles of 66 KV transmission line near Ywa
Mon village in Natmauk township costing K4.09 billion are planned for fiscal
2019-2020, according to Dr. Tun Naing.

Also, a 33/11 KV 5 MVA sub-station and 16 miles of 33 KV transmission line
near Mone city in Kyaukkyi township, Bago Region, costing K1.48 billion are
planned for fiscal 2020-2021 if the money is available, he said.

Similarly, a 66/33 KV 15 MVA sub-station near Yenangyaung industrial zone
and 37 miles of 6 KV transmission line from 132 KV Chauk main station to
Yenangyaung will be built in fiscal 2021/2022.

The budget for the construction of the 66 KV Mindat-Matupi transmission line
and substations will be included in the 2017-18 additional budget and
2018-19 budget. That project will be implemented when there is enough money
to be allocated, the Deputy Minister said.

Small- and medium-scale hydropower projects are planned at Nant Wun creek
and Nant Tha Lauk creek in Lay Shi township, Sagaing Region. The Ministry
will coordinate feasibility studies to be conducted under the management of
the Sagaing regional government and, if necessary, MOEE will provide
technical assistance, he said.
