Sharp to build 16 MW of rooftop PV in Thailand

Sharp to build 16 MW of rooftop PV in Thailand

Sharp Solar Solution Asia (SSSA), a unit of the Japanese group, will install
solar panels on top of stores owned by Bangkok-based hypermarket retailer
Big C. The two companies are now discussing the possibility of expanding the
agreement to include an additional 11 MW of PV capacity.

SSSA will build rooftop solar systems at 16 of Big C's outlets in Thailand,
beginning with the chain's stores near the national capital, in Nakhon
Pathom province and Samut Prakan province. The two sides did not disclose
the terms of the deal.

The Sharp subsidiary will install the arrays in cooperation with Impact
Solar, a commercial rooftop solutions specialist based in Bangkok.
Construction is scheduled to begin in July, with all projects to be
completed between December 2017 and March 2019.

The projects will be financed under the Japanese Ministry of Environment's
Joint Crediting Mechanism. The scheme is designed to contribute to Japan's
greenhouse gas emission reduction target. The rooftop PV projects under
SSSA's initial agreement with Big C are expected to generate about 21.7 GWh
of electricity per year.

"Energy consumption has risen rapidly in Thailand, and it has become a
challenge to diversify energy resources and reduce damage to the
environment," Sharp said in an online statement.

In February, Sharp reported a net loss of ¥37.2 billion yen ($329 million),
down from an initial projected loss of about ¥53 billion yen. It said that
its solar business was unprofitable division. However, Taiwan's Foxconn
Technology — which acquired the struggling Japanese electronics manufacturer
last year — has said that it plans to make additional investments to salvage
Sharp's PV operations.
