Laos: Almost 20 Hydropower Plants Expected to Be Built in Vientiane

Almost 20 hydropower dams in Vientiane Province, with an expected investment
of over 9.7 trillion kip or US$1.2 trillion, are under construction or are
under going feasibility studies.

Four of them have already begun construction including Nam Lik, with a
capacity generation of 64.7 MW. The remaining are the small-scale dams of
Nam Samoy- 5 MW, Nam Mone-6MW and Nam Phai-2.5 MW, according to Houngthong
Khamlasy, Head of the Energy Business Division who is also Head of Vientiane
Energy and Mines Division.

15 other hydropower dams await the signing of the memorandum of
understanding and the documentation process. Two of them are large
construction projects, such as Nam Kong Hydropower Dam with a capacity
installation of 660 MW in Sanakham District and Nam Feuang Hydropower Dam
with a capacity of 60 MW in Mat District. These projects have been permitted
by the central level.

13 other dams are small-scale construction projects. Once they have been
developed, they are expected to generate about 974.3 MW.

Presently, five dams are in operation, including Nam Ngum1, Nam Lik1/2, Nam
Mang 3, Nam Sana and Nam Xong, with a total capacity generation of 315 MW-a
significant contribution to the better living conditions of locals and
provincial development as well as the pursuit of the Lao government's
strategy of making Laos the battery of ASEAN.
