Malaysia: TNB embarks on 'Reimagining TNB' transformation programme
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is embarking on a transformation programme,
Reimagining TNB, aimed at turning major challenges affecting electric
utilities of late into new venture opportunities.
President and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azman Mohd said the energy
trilemma, and "disruptions" brought about by the emergence of various
game-changing technologies was changing the utilities landscape.
"We in TNB view these big shifts as opportunities and are embracing them
with specific strategies under our transformation programme," he said in a
statement on Tuesday.
Speaking at the recently concluded Conference of Electric Power Supply
(CEPSI 2016) in Bangkok, Thailand, he said the industry was facing trilemmas
comprising challenges of addressing energy security, providing access to
affordable energy services and maintaining environmentally friendly
production and use of energy.
On the "disrupting" technologies, he said the challenges among others came
from rising competition in renewable energy, increasing efficiency of energy
storage batteries, the Internet-of-Things, smart grid and smart cities as
such, alongside the need to incorporate them into business and operation.
Azman said in turning the challenges into opportunities through Reimagining
TNB, it involved four main thrusts.
These include actively pursuing future generation sources, especially
renewable energy, grid of the future including smart grid, winning the
customer for new and enhanced services and products and regulations,
particularly under incentive based regulations, he added.
