Cambodia: Malaysia Eyes Green Energy Investment
A dozen Malaysian companies involved in green energy yesterday opened a
showroom in Phnom Penh to display their products, ranging from solar panels
to energy efficient LED lighting.
Lieng Vuthy, deputy director at the Energy Ministry's new and renewable
energy department called the venture an important step in making Cambodia's
energy usage greener.
"We hope that they will bring more environmentally friendly products to the
country, and help to reduce the current high price of electricity in
Cambodia," Mr. Vuthy said.
"There are plenty of potential energy investments in Cambodia, but we can
see these companies are very interested in solar-generated power," Mr. Vuthy
said.
Ruzaimi Mohamad, from the Malaysian embassy, said that the announcement
signaled the beginning of an increased partnership between the two countries
in green energy.
"We hope that even more connections between Cambodian and Malaysian
companies will be built up so that they can help each other," he said.
"Presently, Malaysian companies may not know what Cambodian companies do and
[vice versa]."
Ko Chuan Zhen, executive director of the Malaysia-based Plus Solar Systems,
said that his company was involved in the venture to find local partners to
build a proposed solar plant.
"As we know Cambodia right now really needs more energy, and Cambodia is
growing very fast [economically] so we believe that there are a lot of
opportunities where we can cooperate well," he said.
His comments were echoed by Prabodh Sheth, CEO of iCEE International. Mr.
Sheth's company provides energy saving fittings for commercial buildings.
"Renewable energy is the most preferred medium everywhere now. Cambodia
mainly focuses on solar power and our products will meet this demand," he
said.
At present Cambodia lacks any large-scale solar projects. A $12.5 million 10
MW solar farm in Svay Rieng province was recently announced as the first
such project, but that will not come online until mid-2017.
