Malaysia: Sarawak Energy Board blames blackout on double circuit trip

A massive blackout across Malaysia's largest state yesterday was caused by a
double circuit trip at the 275kV Selangau-Kemena transmission line, the
Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) said.

The power outage at about 6.26pm yesterday affected many parts of the
Sarawak capital of Kuching and other areas from Sri Aman, Sarikei and Mukah
all the way to Sibu, The Borneo Post reported today.

The report cited an SEB statement saying supply was restored in stages, with
some areas in Kuching getting their power back in under seven minutes and
most of the rest by 7.52pm.

"SEB is investigating the cause of the double circuit trip on the
Selangau-Kemena line that led to the outage. We sincerely apologise to our
affected customers for the inconvenience caused," SEB chief operating
officer Lu Yew Hung was quoted saying.
