BayWa r.e. wins 5MW project in Malaysia solar auction first round
BayWa r.e. has won a 5MW solar PV project in the first round of Malaysia's
largest ever solar auction.
The company collaborated with the University of Malaysia (UNIMAP) and local
renewable energy developer Sun Energy Ventures in a consortium named SBU
Power to win the project at UNIMAP, in Arau in the far north of the country.
Construction on the project will start in August 2017, with generation
expected in January 2018. Power generated will be sold to the utility Tenaga
Nasional Berhad (TNB).
Back in March, the Energy Commission of Malaysia (EC) issued a Request for
Proposal (RfP) document hoping to auction up to 460MWac of large-scale solar
capacity.
Matthias Taft, board member of BayWa AG energy business, commented on the
win: "Winning this project in the first round of Malaysia's solar auctions
is testament to our ever-increasing capability in the area and the
investment we are making in South East Asia.
"We are one of a select few companies that have the technical expertise,
capability and financial standing to successfully deliver these projects
anywhere in the world. This means we are ideally placed to help Malaysia,
and other countries in the region, to achieve their renewable energy
ambitions."
