Myanmar: Villagers demand electrification committee
About 60 residents in Hinthada Township, Ayeyarwady Region, have protested
against a rural electrification committee and the township administrator
over the electricity supply for Yonthalin village.
The protesters marched on the township electric engineer's office chanting
slogans.
"We are protesting against the electrification committee and the township
administrator. The public fund has totalled Ks300 million. The state has
provided transformers. Two well-wishers contributed Ks10 million. The money
collected from the public amounted to over Ks200 million. We asked them to
do the accounts. But there is no voucher or receipt. The township
administrator asked us to come to his office so that he could see the
accounts," said one of the protest organisers, Mann Kyaw Aung Tun.
He continued that the administrator himself violated the law. So they were
protesting against the township administrator and the committee for not
doing the accounts of public funds.
Hinthada Township Administrator Than Naing said: "Yonthalin Village
Electrification Committee was established by the villagers themselves, not
by our administrative body. It was formed over two years ago. They
themselves collected donated money, raised funds and spent them under their
own management. The government has nothing to do with them. If they want to
know about the accounts and we will take step-by-step action after seeking
approval. But we will form a supervisory committee to oversee that
electrification committee."
