Myanmar: Tanintharyi names Dawei electricity supplier
Tanintharyi Region's government has chosen DDPC to distribute electricity in
Dawei for Ks210 per unit, despite opposition from residents.
The contract with APU to distribute electricity in Dawei has expired and
Global Grand Services Co Ltd (GGS) will produce electricity for Ks130 per
unit.
DDPC was granted the contract to distribute electricity as it agreed to the
demands of GGS and insured the deal with Ks1.56 billion.
The company would be allowed a six-month trial period, said Kyi Hlaing,
regional minister for electric power and energy.
"PPTC said it could not carry out some of the ministry's demands. So we
chose DDPC. The company said it would employ 200 workers and add more
machinery. The regional government asked to distribute electricity for
lampposts. We granted them six months and the contract will be renewed every
six months. The regional government will give the company a warning if it
fails to meet the terms agreed in the contract. If it fails to follow the
agreement, the contract will be terminated," said the minister.
The GGS said it would produce electricity using gas turbines in Kanpauk and
the plant was about 99-per-cent finished.
The firm reportedly agreed to pay US$2,000 per day from its deposit for
every day that it failed to supply electricity.
The minister said the regional government had not thoroughly scrutinised the
DDPC's deposit to ensure it was earned legally.
Residents have criticised the regional government for not accepting PPTC's
offer of around Ks190 per unit because it could not pay the deposit.
The regional government was accused of not being properly democratic and
putting income ahead of lower electricity cost for residents.
