Philippines: Manila Water finishes testing waste-to-energy project

The Ayala-led firm said in a statement on Friday that the project located at
the South Seepage Treatment Plant (SpTP) at the Food Terminal Complex is
part of efforts to "integrate innovation in its operations as a way to
promote efficiency."

Once the WTE system starts full-scale operations, it can cover more than
100% of the power requirements of the SpTP; bringing down the facility's
greenhouse gas emissions, specifically carbon dioxide, by 267 tons in a
year; and generate up to P17 million in annual savings for the company on
power expenses.

"Coming up with this project took a number of years of research, testing,
and feasibility calculations. On full scale, after this pilot, this facility
will produce surplus power greater than what this plant requires to
operate," Manila Water Corporate Operations Group Director Geodino V. Carpio
was quoted in the statement as saying.

Manila Water is exploring various ways that it can scale up and
commercialize the system, Mr. Carpio added.

The WTE facility -- the first of its kind in the country -- uses septage, or
waste materials removed from septic tanks, as a feed source. Septage sludge
collected in the South SpTP as a byproduct of treating used water at the
plant, is converted into biogas through the anaerobic digestion process, and
the biogas produced is then converted to electricity.

Manila Water primarily provides water and wastewater services to the east
zone concession area covering the cities of Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig,
Pateros, San Juan, Taguig, and Marikina; parts of Manila and Quezon City, as
well as some areas in Rizal province.

The company has subsidiaries operating in Laguna, Boracay, Pampanga, and
Cebu.
