Schottel deploys Singapore tidal
Schottel Hydro has deployed a floating tidal device featuring a 62kW turbine
off Singapore's Sentosa island.
The Schottel SIT250 turbine is attached to a catamaran barge and features
"passive swivel" to allow bidirectional generation, said the Germany
developer.
The work was carried out in collaboration with Nanyang Technological
University's Energy Research Institute using LitaOcean as the local
shipyard.
Singapore consultancy OceanPixel provided project management while Aquatera
supervised deployment and marine operations.
Schottel is eyeing further opportunities for deploying floating tidal in
Singapore tidal through UK developer Sustainable Marine Energy in which it
is an investor.
SME has signed a deal with a local shipyard to deploy its first floating
Plat-I platform for a demonstration project in Singapore waters.
The platform will host four SIT250 turbines.
SME director Jason Hayman said: "The opportunity for deploying systems into
the off-grid and microgrid markets within southeast Asia is very
significant.
"If we can prove that tidal stream energy can compete effectively with small
scale diesel generation then we are well on our way to proving its
commercial viability."
