Pertamina to invest up to $12 bn into geothermal development in Indonesia to
2025
At a press meeting today, Indonesian PT Pertamina (Persero), through its
subsidiary Pertamina Geothermal Energy announced investment plans of about
$12 billion for geothermal development until 2025.
"Through Pertamina Geothermal Energy, we hope that by 2025, we could
contribute up to 31 percent of geothermal power generation capacity in the
country, "said Vice President Corporate Communications Pertamina Wianda
Pusponegoro in discussions related to clean energy and media briefing today
in Denpasar.
According Wianda it is currently aggressively developing renewable energy it
to slowly break away from dependence on fossil energy.
The state-owned Pertamina Geothermal Energy is currently developing 11
projects in six different locations spread from Sumatra, Sulawesi and West
Java including in Sibayak, Full River, Hululais, Lumut Balai, Ulubelu,
Kamojang, Karaha, Lahendong.
By 2025, it is expected that fuel consumption will increase to 875,000
barrels of gasoline per day, a surge of 57% over 2015, when 559,000 barrels
were used.
Diesel consumption is also expected to rise by 113% by 2025, to 684 thousand
barrels per day from 321 thousand barrels per day in 2015.
With the geothermal projects by Pertamina, it is expected that about 107.5
thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day can be saved.
Moreover, it can meet the electricity needs of about 984,000 households
(installed capacity of 492 MW as of July 2016) to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions by 6.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
