Myanmar: Hydropower projects under construction

The National League for Democracy government is planning hydropower plant
projects which will generate more than 1,650MW, according to the Electric
Power Generation Enterprise (EPGE) at the Ministry of Electricity and
Energy.

All the hydropower projects being developed would have a capacity of about
3,200MW, it said.

The ministry said the cost per unit of hydropower was between Ks50 and Ks70,
natural gas Ks120, charcoal Ks70-90; solar Ks100-160 and wind power
Ks110-170.

The country mainly relies on hydropower and natural gas with an average cost
of Ks70 per unit. The EPGE said bills must rise to allow increased
production to cover rising costs.

An EPGE official said: "Power generation is set to reach around 3,300MW
later this year. The EPGE is moving to reduce power cuts. We have already
chosen two foreign companies for power generation of more than 400MW."

Hydropower projects under construction are Middle Paunglaung (100MW),
Shweli-3 (1050MW), Upper Namhtwan (3.2MW), Deedoke (60MW), Upper Yeywa
(280MW), Thahtaychaung (111MW) and Upper Kengtung (52MW).
