Indonesia: RNI, Pertamina and Toyota Team Up to Develop Renewable Energy
The state-owned sugar producer Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia announced
another step in its partnership with state energy company Pertamina and
Japanese car manufacturer Toyota in developing renewable energy from
elephant grass.
RNI celebrated the first harvest of elephant grass for its research on
Thursday (06/10).
"The discussion for this cooperation started in 2015 and then marked by a
memorandum of understanding signing in 2016," Didik Prasetyo, RNI president
director, said in a statement.
The government has set a target of at renewable energy accounting for at
least 23 percent of total energy consumption by 2025. Currently, only 13
percent of total usage is renewable, data from the energy ministry shows.
"This is only a first step," Didik said.
"RNI is open to other sources of renewable energy because the potential of
biomass waste from production process on the field and RNI group's factories
is quite massive," Didik said.
RNI businesses cover agriculture industry, pharmaceutical, medical
equipment, retail and distribution with over 12 subsidiaries.
PG Rajawali II, an RNI sugarcane mill based in Cirebon, West Java, has
prepared its research center and seven hectare plot of land in Jatitujuh,
Majalengka, for the energy research purposes since 2015.
RNI's subsidiaries, including tea producer Mitra Kerinci, have also
developed its own hydroelectric power generation in Liki, South Solok, West
Sumatra.
