Myanmar: 20 hydropower projects planned to generate over 6,000 MW

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy has issued a statement saying that a
total of 6,270 MW of electricity will be generated from 20 new hydropower
projects. However, details about the projects including the locations were
not released.

Ministry officials said it took about 10 or 15 years to take steps towards
beginning hydropower projects such as conducting feasibility study, surveys
and building the necessary infrastructure.

Currently, six hydropower plants including Shweli and Upper Yeywa are under
construction to supply over 1,600 MW of electricity.

These six projects are expected to produce 1,622.4 megawatts-1051 MW from
Shweli (3), 200 MW from Upper Yeywa, 30.4 MW from Upper Baluchaung, 111 MW
from Thahtay, 51 MW from Upper Kyaingtaung and 100 MW from Central
Paunglaung.

Under the National Electricity Master Plan, the country will increase
electricity generation by about 13 per cent every year. Over the past five
years, the increase has been16 per cent yearly, according to the ministry's
data.

The ministry also has a plan to build gas-fired power plants to generate
1,707 MW. Moreover, a 220-MW solar power plant will be built in Minbu
Township of Magway Region and a 300-MW solar power station in Wandwin and
Nabuai Townships of Mandalay Region.

Wind power stations are also planned in Chin and Rakhine states and
Ayeyawady Region.
