Philippines: RP Energy inks construction deal for 600-MW coal-fired power
plant in Subic Bay

Redondo Peninsula Energy, Inc. (RP Energy) has signed agreements with two
construction-related companies to build two 300-megawatt coal-fired power
plants on Redondo Peninsula in Subic Bay.

In a disclosure with the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Monday, Manila
Electric Company (Meralco) said RP Energy, signed construction contract with
Azul Torre Construction Inc. and a supply contract with Doosan Heavy
Industries and Construction Co. Ltd.

Meralco's subsidiary, Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) holds 47 percent equity
interest in RP Energy while Therma Power Inc., an Aboitiz Power Corp.
(AboitizPower) subsidiary, and Taiwan Cogeneration International Corp., have
a 25-percent stake each.

MGEN has invested about Php 1 billion for the project's civil works.

Construction of the coal-fired power plant at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone
faced several constraints after environmentalist groups filed a Writ of
Kalikasan case against the power generation company.

However, the Supreme Court (SC), in a February 2015 decision, upheld the
validity of MGEN's environmental compliance certificate (ECC).

Other hurdles in the power plant's construction are transmission lines and
right of way (ROW) issues.

The company eyes to finish the construction of the power plant by 2019.
