Laos: Nam Ngum 1 Upgrades Underway
The Lao government has borrowed money from the Chinese Government to upgrade
the capacity of the Nam Ngum 1 hydropower dam by installing two additional
turbines.
The loan will be used for the addition of two additional turbines No 7 and 8
with a total capacity of 80 megawatts to increase the dam's output from 155
MW to 235 MW.
The move was made in response to high consumption across the country in the
dry season, in Vientiane Capital in particular - a major consumer of
electricity.
Deputy Head of Nam Ngum 1 Dam Expansion Project of Electricite du Laos
Daovieng Sounanthalath disclosed last Friday that the dam expansion is now
88 percent complete since construction work began in the middle of 2015.
The USD 122 million construction project including two 6.6 metre x 313 metre
channels, powerhouses and other related works is expected to be completed by
2018.
Following the completion of the current expansion, the project will go on to
develop the 6th turbine of the dam with a capacity of 40 MW which is
expected to be completed by 2019, he said.
