Myanmar: Electricity subsidies face axe
The government is planning to revise electricity prices as the subsidies
cost around Ks333 billion annually, according to permanent secretary Htay
Aung of the Ministry of Electric Power and Energy.
He said: "We will revise the rates. We are not saying we will increase the
rates. We will change the current fixed prices. We invited state and
regional governments and MPs to discuss it. They know the public better as
they have been chosen by them. So we will discuss the rates with ministries
and MPs."
Almost 4,080,000 households (about 37.5 per cent) had access to the national
grid last financial year, according to the ministry.
"We are using Ks333 billion of government funds to supply electricity to 37
per cent of villages," said deputy permanent secretary Soe Myint from the
ministry.
About 8,872 villages had access to the national grid in 2015-16 and 10,700
villages in 2016-17.
