Laos: Gov's Approves Three More Hydropower Projects with Combined Capacity
of 41.2 MW

The government has approved the local multi-sectoral Chaleunsap Group to
develop three hydropower projects in the provinces of Borikhamxay and
Savannakhet with a combined installed capacity of 41.2 megawatts.

One hydropower project will be constructed on the Nam Xang River in
Viengthong district of Bolikhamxay Province, while the other two projects
will be built each on the Nam Teung River and Saynamkhong Stream in
Xaychamphone district, Savannakhet Province.

The agreement on these projects was signed last Wednesday in Borikhamxay
Province between Director General of the Borikhamxay Provincial Energy and
Mines Department and Chairman of Laos' multi-sectoral Chaleunsap Group, Mr
Kaseumsack Keosayavong.

Vice Bolikhamxay Governor Mr Bounseng Pathammavong and relevant officials
from both sides witnessed the signing ceremony.

Under the agreement, the construction of these three projects are expected
be completed within three years and all generated electricity will be sold
to Electricite Du Laos.

The multi-sectoral Chaleunsap Group will spend more than US$90 million to
develop these projects.

The Nam Xung Hydropower Project, costing over US$29 million, will have a
total installed generation capacity of 14.8 megawatts and is expected to
generate more than 63,500 GWh of electric current per year.

The Nam Teung Hydropower Project, with an investment of over US$28 million,
will have an installed generation capacity of 12.8 megawatts and is expected
to generate over 42,500 GWh of electric power annually.

The Huaysaynamkhong Hydropower Project, worth over US$32 million, will have
an installed generation capacity of 13.6 megawatts and is expected to
annually generate more than 48,600 GWh of power current.

The government is expected to receive US$13 million as revenue in form of
royalties, and US$8 million in the form of a social development contribution
in the respective provinces from the three hydropower projects over a
45-year concessional period.
