Itochu to develop 507 kW array with storage in Indonesia
Japanese trading firm Itochu has revealed plans to install 507 kW solar on
the roof of a new mall in Jakarta, Indonesia.
"The project involves the largest amount of solar power generation by a
commercial facility in the country," Itochu claimed in an online statement.
Panasonic will supply the PV modules, as well as storage batteries. Itochu
did not reveal the specifications of the planned storage system. EPC
contractor PT Fuji Furukawa E&C Indonesia will install the solar panels on
top of Aeon Mall Jakarta Garden City, a new shopping centre that PT Aeon
Mall Indonesia plans to open in late September.
The PV array, which will provide electricity for lights in the mall's retail
outlets, will be built under the Japanese government's Joint Crediting
Mechanism (JCM) carbon offset scheme. Under the JCM, Japanese companies
deploy various technologies in developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions in exchange for carbon credits.
Tokyo-based Itochu has been particularly active in promoting storage
solutions in recent months. In May, it began selling its new Smart Star L
lithium-ion storage battery system for the Japanese residential solar
market, in cooperation with Japanese manufacturer NF Corp. And in August, it
started operating a microgrid powered by a 1 MW solar array in India, in
cooperation with Hitachi and Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology
Development Organization (NEDO).
Last February, Itochu finished building a 37 MW solar project in western
Japan's Okayama prefecture. The Tokyo-listed plans to eventually expand its
development pipeline in the country to 200 MW.
