Philippines: Mayor eyes WTE facility in Inayawan
CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña wants to establish a waste-to-energy (WTE)
facility inside the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill as part of the City
Government's commitment to rehabilitate it.
Osmeña, who was in Bangkok, Thailand over the weekend, visited a WTE there
where 500 tons of trash are processed daily and converted to electricity.
"I am spending my weekend studying a project I really want to bring to Cebu.
The Philippines is probably the last densely populated country in Asia to
not implement a WTE. The plant I am looking at is a sight to behold," he
said in a Facebook post last Saturday.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration first introduced the plan to
construct a WTE in 2013 to deal with the huge amount of trash in their city.
About 9,000 tons of trash are collected in Bangkok everyday, of which 1,000
tons are used for their WTE.
Of the 1,000 tons, 600 are used to produce electricity while the others are
being recycled.
During his visit, Osmeña also learned that Bangkok's WTE emissions have
surpassed the European industrial standards.
Its byproducts are slag, which are used to make bricks to fix roads and to
produce clean fresh water where fish can live.
Aside from Bangkok, similar facilities have been operating in Singapore and
Japan.
Osmeña said that in Japan, a WTE facility located less than three kilometers
from the Imperial Palace has been operating without the Japanese emperor
complaining about it.
With the Department of Public Services collecting about 500 tons of trash
daily in Cebu City, the mayor said constructing a WTE facility will help the
city efficiently manage its solid waste.
"A WTE doesn't create as much energy as a normal power plant, but our
objective in Cebu is to dispose our garbage in the most economical and
environmentally friendly way as possible. The electricity is just a happy
bonus," he said.
At present, Cebu City has started fencing the landfill in Barangay Inayawan
as part of their commitment before the Court of Appeals to rehabilitate the
facility.
