Myanmar: Yangon unveils hot-season power plan
Yangon Region's government has plans to prevent power blackouts during the
hot season by generating an extra 100 megawatts, said Myint Thaung, Yangon
minister for planning and finance.
"The regional minister for electrical power said a special fund from
President Htin Kyaw had been received to buy a generator worth Ks30 billion,
which can generate 25 megawatts of electricity. We are worried about power
blackouts in the commercial hub," he said.
"We will install the generator as quickly as possible. The minister for
electric power and energy said Yangon region would have another 70 or 75
megawatts of electricity this hot season as more gas for turbines will be
available. So we are trying to have about an extra 100 megawatts this hot
season," said the minister.
The use of electricity in Yangon Region increases between 150 megawatts and
200 megawatts annually and 45 per cent of total electricity generated is
used by the region. And the government has been trying to fill the shortfall
to avoid power cuts during the hot season, when falling water levels reduces
hydropower production.
"Businesses are worried about blackouts this hot season. If the government
can supply about 95 megawatts, it will address the issue," said Zaw Min Win,
chairman of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
