Myanmar: 49% of power industry in private hands

The ownership ratio between the government and the private sector in the
electricity sector is 51:49, Dr Tun Naing, deputy minister for electricity
and energy, told a forum at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and
Industry in Yangon.

"Before 2008, electricity production was fully controlled by the government
when 6 per cent was handed to the private sector," he added.

"By 2009-10, the government owned 76 per cent and by 2015-16 it was 51.6 per
cent."

By 2015-16, the hydropower sector accounted for 59 per cent of the total
power generated while gas-fired plants produced most of the rest, according
to the ministry.

Hydropower generation falls during the hot season as the water levels in
dams falls.

Power consumption increased from 6.4 billion units in 2010-11 to 13.5
billion in 2015-16, he continued.

During the last five years, power consumption has increased by 16 per cent a
year while many villages have no access to electricity, there are frequent
power cuts. An estimated 65 per cent of households have no access to
electricity.
