Thailand decreases 2036 renewables goal by 37 percent

Thailand reduced its renewable and alternative energy target for 2036 by 37
percent as it grapples with uncertainty in molasses and cassava feedstock
production.

Under its Alternative Energy Development Plan, Thailand set a goal to
increase renewable and alternative energy use from 7 percent in 2015 to 25
percent in 2036, as well as ethanol consumption from 1.18 billion liters in
2015 to 2.6 billion by 2036. Thailand's original goal for ethanol
consumption was 4.1 billion by 2036.

Molasses, cassava and sugarcane supplies are expected to decrease, delaying
the country's plan to eliminate E10 blends, in favor of higher blends such
as E20 and E85.

The current production capacity includes 1 billion liters of molasses-based
ethanol, 100 million liters of sugarcane-based ethanol, and 700 million
liters of cassava-based ethanol.
