Philippines: Meralco subsidiary files RES license at ERC
Vantage Energy Solutions and Management Inc., a subsidiary of the Manila
Electric Co. (Meralco), filed an application for a retail electricity
supplier license at the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Tuesday.
According to a disclosure from the local bourse Thursday, the retail
electricity supplier will provide services, such as wholesale contracting,
energy trading and sourcing, marketing, selling and aggregating electricity,
billing, collection and other services to contestable customers.
The RES license will allow Meralco to sell electricity to contestable
customers, who are allowed to select their own supplier due to their huge
demand. Contestable customers have a consumption of at least 1 megawatt.
Earlier, the distribution utility said it will not apply for an RES license,
explaining it has already complied with the initial requirements after
obtaining its franchise as a distribution utility.
Meralco is the country's largest distribution utility, with more than 5
million customers in Luzon.
