Philippines: Biodiesel fuel plant inauguration set

Philippines: Biodiesel fuel plant inauguration set

A PLANT that will process used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel (BDF) will be
inaugurated on Friday, August 25, at the Maa Composting Facility, Davao
City.

Davao City Environment and Natural Resources Office head Engineer Eliza
Madrazo said that the plant is not newly constructed but an existing
building renovated to house the BDF machine and it will be located near the
Dog Pound.

Madrazo said that without having final area for the BDF machine, they have
already initially processed 1,000 liters of used cooking oil for BDF through
a feasibility study done by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica)
that expressed interest to put up the project in the city.

She said that 1,000 liters of cooking oil produced 900 liters of BDF since
only 10 percent were wasted.

The BDF machine from Jica arrived in the city last June to test the
viability of the project.

Madrazo said that they collected the used cooking oil from barangays and
business establishments to produce 1,000 liters.

"Nakaproduce na, gitry namo sa among truck kadtong mga units, among
gisulayan (We have already produced BDF and we tried it to our vehicle
units)," she said, adding that they used it to the four trucks and service
vehicle.

Madrazo said that hopefully on Friday, those from the transport office which
she invited will join the event and test if the BDF can also be used to
their vehicles.

Some representatives from business establishments where they got the used
cooking oil have also been invited for them to see the process of making
BDF.

Aside from the business sector, officials from the national government are
expected to attend.

She also said that they have invited the Land Transportation Office, as it
is the part of the clean air program.

Madrazo said that the use of BDF hopefully can lead to environment
protection since it will utilize the waste and reuse it to biodiesel.

Madrazo said they hope that the facility will encourage the Dabawenyos to
recycle used oil.

"We are looking into the progress of the project so that it can be
sustained.

It is important that they can see the process, since our purpose after the
inauguration is that the facility can be a destination of educational tours,
where the visitors can see the process from raw material into this kind of
product," she said.

She added that recycling of used oil is also a form of flooding mitigation
since it will declog the canals from the used oil thrown from houses.

Madrazo said Jica will supervise the BDF machine in the first two years
before it will be turned over to the city.

The machine costs US$1 million.
