Vietnam: Vinacomin has successfully applied CFB technology in the thermal
power plants

According to the information from Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries
Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin), after surveying worldwide
experience for circulating fluidized bet (CFB) boiler technology, a
technology for bad coal (low calorific value and high sulfur content)
combustion to achieve lower emission of pollutants, Vinacomin has selected
this technology for developing its 6 bet coal fired thermal power plants
(TPP) as Na Duong (110 MW), Cao Ngan (115 MW), Son Dong (220 MW), Cam Pha
(680 MW), Mao Khe (440 MW) and Nong Son (30 MW).

In CFB boiler the fuel will burnt at a temperature of 760oC - 926oC to
prevent nitrogen oxide (NOx) from forming. While burning, flue gas such as
sulfur dioxide will be released. At the same time, sulfur-absorbing chemical
as limestone will be used to mix with the fuel particles in fluidization
phase, which will absorb almost 95% of the sulfur pollutants without the
high cost flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) system

Coal used in Cam Pha (2x340 MW) and Mao Khe (2x220 MW) TPPs has a low heat
value (coal dust 6a, 6b) and due to a high combustion efficiency, the ash
and slag have a low content of non-burned carbon so they are utilized for
non-baked bricks an cement additives., that leads to decreasing area of slag
dumping site. Besides, the closed waste water system which allows reusing
waste water after treatment also minimizes discharging water into the
environment.

To promote these successes, in coming time, Vinacomin will consider
developing TPPs with high- efficiency low- emissions (HELE) technology as
supercritical (SC) and ultra supercritical (USC) boilers in order to raise
efficiency of TPPs and minimize environmental impacts.
