Myanmar: Dawei residents slam power cuts

The residents of Dawei Township, Taninthayi Region, launched a second
protest on July 11 against frequent power cuts in the area.

The protesters - composed mostly of youths - lit candles in front of the
office of the regional government. The first protest was on July 10.

According to residents, the Global Grand Services Company set up a
14-megawatt gas-fuelled power plant, and the Dawei Development Public
Company has been distributing the electricity to the Kanpauk area at Ks 210
(US$0.15) per unit.

The protesters argued that power shortages have been common since July 1.

Wai Phyo, a protester, said that he had received permission from the police
for a 300-person protest march on July 12.

Since 2013, what was then the Energy Ministry has purchased gas from
offshore sites and distributed electricity to Kanpauk at Ks 300 per unit.
The residents said power cuts also happened then.

Now, the regional government has reduced the price to Ks 210 per unit but
cannot eliminate power shortages, according to protesters.
